Further Reaches of Consciousness Research 5-7 November 2021 Welcome to the Beyond the Brain conference series Beyond the Brain 2021 is the 16th event in the world’s premier conference series exploring new research on whether and how consciousness and mind extend beyond the physical brain and body. Consciousness is one of the most exciting topics in science, which is why we established the interdisciplinary Beyond the Brain conference series with Willis Harman and Edgar Mitchell of IONS at St John’s College, Cambridge, in 1995. The conferences all explore the frontiers of consciousness research beyond the limits of scientific materialism. Our speakers all...

We are living in unparalleled times. Saying so is such an understatement that I am reluctant to be cliché. And yet, it’s obvious to everyone. A sweeping virus, swinging stock markets, and increasingly polarized dynamics at social and political levels, can pull us off course. Public health professionals call upon us to shelter in place. Practicing physical distancing is almost the new normal. In the midst of these turbulent seas, many of us are experiencing anxiety, isolation and loneliness. What can we do? As I live into my own reactions to the news of the moment, my worldview has been...

A recent article published in the online magazine, Uplift, discusses Marilyn Schlitz's parapsychology experiments. Dr. Marilyn Schlitz has conducted some of the most prominent parapsychology experiments in history. In the lab, she has explored psi phenomena like the ability of a person’s thoughts to physically affect another person’s body. She has taught at Trinity University, Stanford University, Harvard Medical Centers, and currently at Silicon Valley’s Sofia University. She has lectured at institutions including the United Nations and the Smithsonian Institution. Schlitz has been instrumental in making inroads for parapsychology into mainstream science—in starting to bridge the gap between believers and skeptics. But even if skeptics...

A recent article published in the online magazine, Inverse, details the the life and dreaming culture of the indigenous Achuar peoples of the Amazon. I was interviewed for this piece, drawing upon my experiences working with and conducting anthropological research with this thriving jungle community 20 years ago. Specifically, I had studied the dreaming culture of the Achuar who interpret dreams daily to inform their lives and act for their future. In partnership with a dozen young Achuar men who agreed to record their dreams for the course of one year, the collaboration yielded a deep perspective into the power of sharing dreams amongst a community, and...

Captain Edgar Mitchell was a hero, stepping up to challenges throughout his life with courage and tenacity. Born in Texas on September 17, 1930, Mitchell embraced a changing world in every moment. He often remarked that his grandparents had traveled across the country in a covered wagon and he went to the moon. Anything is possible. During his illustrious career, Mitchell was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, noetic scientist, and NASA astronaut. He was a test pilot during the Korean War, taking off and landing on the aircraft carriers. It was, according to Mitchell, like finding...

Centuries ago, adventurers exploring the frontiers of our planet discovered, again and again, that they lived in a wider world than previously assumed. During this period, the art of mapmaking made tremendous strides. Fictitious lines of latitude and longitude became as important to navigators as the force of currents and the direction of winds. Perceptions of the world changed as new tools were discovered and new ideas unfolded. More recently, the quest to understand the universe and our place in it follows a similar pushing of boundaries with its own inventive mapmaking. New maps are being made to reflect new discoveries....

I have presented at various conferences and events around the world in the past year. At one conference, in Sweden, I also sat down for a filmed dialogue about the nature of consciousness. Joining me were Lothar Schafer and Anna Bornstein, both pioneering minds in the realm of consciousness theory. Recently the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies (IJTS) published a paper I co-wrote titled: "Engagement in a Community-Based Integral Practice Program Enhances Well-being." The article reports on a study examining a wellness intervention and its effect on health outcomes. In publication for over 30 years, the IJTS is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal sponsored by the California Institute of Integral Studies, and serves as the official publication of the International Transpersonal Association. Participants in the study used a community-based program called Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) and provided questionnaire data before, during, and after the one-year period in the program. Significant improvements were seen in overall health,...
